Coaches Page - Mike Canales

Mike was a Quarterback in college, when he played for Utah State. He graduated in 1984 and has been coaching offense and quarterbacks ever since. Last year however, he had been the WR coach in for the Jets, but was able to accept the Offensive Coordinator job for Arizona. He was one of the last coaches named to the team, and Mike Stoops first choice for the job.

Players have had nothing but great things to say about Canales so far, even with the extra workouts he has been putting them through. QB Costa has said of Canales so far, “He’s quiet when he needs to be, yet he’s very vocal when he wants to be. When there is something he doesn’t like, he’ll let you know, but he’ll do it in a way that isn’t degrading to the player.

Canales has his work cut out for him this year. He continues to improve an offense that was unable to run or throw, or even score when he took it over. With some solid recruits finally coming in, Canales will start to have some good talent to throw in the mix. With the signing of Willie Tuitama, Mike Canales now has the beginnings of a real, dangerous, quick scoring offense. It is proving to be a slow process, but I believe he is the man to do it. Mike Stoops believes in him, and that is enough for me.

For anyone who has met with, and talked to Coach Canales before, you will know one thing. This guy absolutely LOVE football, and is 100% dedicated to see it succeed in Tucson.
